Council defers decision on Poll

On Tues 30 April 2024 Northern Beaches Council voted to defer until their June meeting a decision on whether to conduct a council-wide de-amalgamation poll to coinicide with the September 2024 Local Government elections. Pittwater ward Cr Gencher (who recently defected from Your Northern Beaches to join the Liberal Party) amended the original proposal by fellow Pittwater ward Cr Korzy, deferring the decision to definately conduct a poll in Sept and instead proposing that Council staff provide more information to Councillors and an online survey using ‘Your Say’ be conducted between now and the June meeting. Whilst somewhat of a set-back, Council’s CEO confirmed that a decision on the wording of a poll could be finalised in June with enough time for that poll to be organised by the NSW Electoral Commission. During the debate on the amendments to the motion it was clear a majority of Councillors accepted that the process of forced amalgamations had not been a demoncratic one and that the people of Pittwater deserved to have their democratic voice heard on this important issue.
