Our Formal Proposal

On 19 March 2025 our proposal to reinstate Pittwater Council on its previous boundaries was presented personally to the Hon. Ron Hoenig, MP, Minister for Local Government with well over 4,000 Pittwater electors signatures in support.  The formal proposal was made under s215 of the NSW Local Government Act 1993 which requires the Minister for Local Government to refer proposals he considers worthy to the NSW Boundaries Commission for review.

On 2 March 2026, Minister Hoenig wrote back to Protect Pittwater asking for at least 2,000 more signatures before he would be prepared to refer our Proposal to the Boundaries Commission.

It is now URGENT that we collect those additional signatures from Pittwater electors who have not yet signed the written proposal during the past two years.  We are encouraging all supporters to now download the proposal sheet and print the 2 pages back to back (so the map is printed on the back and forms part of what is signed):

De-amalgamation from Northern Beaches Council

We propose that the newly constituted Pittwater Local Government Area be divided into three wards named North Ward, Central Ward and South Ward and that three Councillors be elected from each ward with the Councillors electing the Mayor of the new Pittwater Council.

The three proposed wards will retain substantially the same boundaries as those that existed prior to 12 May 2016, with adjustments made only as necessary under section 210 of the Local Government Act 1993 to ensure that the number of electors in each ward does not differ by more than 10%.

The remainder of the current Northern Beaches Council area would continue to be known as the Northern Beaches area and governed by the Northern Beaches Council without dissolution. This proposal applies solely to the re-establishment of the former Pittwater Council area.

Protect Pittwater was established in 2017 by Pittwater residents dedicated to reinstating the former Pittwater Council. In 2016, despite being deemed Fit for Future, the coalition government forced Pittwater to amalgamate with Warringah and Manly Councils. Our core mission is to bring back Pittwater Council to ensure strong, independent representation for our community, achieve better fiscal results with less bureaucracy and foster the unique environmental and urban characteristics of Pittwater for residents and visitors alike. We are non-partisan.
